What is fiber-to-the-home?

Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) refers to the installation and use of fiber-optic cables to carry digital information directly to homes and businesses.  These cables are made up of anywhere from 1 fiber to hundreds of fiber optics, which are long, thin strands of pure glass about the diameter of a human hair.

FTTH replaces the duplicate infrastructure that telephone companies previously installed in neighborhoods.  Fiber has a higher bandwidth capacity and can easily transmit applications like telephone, internet, and IPTV with plenty of capacity left over for other applications in the future.

FTTH provides many benefits to Minford Telephone Company customers including:

  • More Bandwidth
    • Fiber has the capability to transport virtually unlimited bandwidth.  This will accommodate today’s demand for high speed internet connections as well as the advanced applications of tomorrow.
  • Greater Reliability
    • Fiber-optic cables are less susceptible to the effects from the environment than traditional copper wires (lightning, moisture, power influence…)
  • Future Flexibiltiy
    • FTTH is considered “future proof” and offers the flexibility to deliver additional services in the years to come.
  • Cost Efficiency
    • Fiber-optic cable can be made fro less than the equivalent length of copper wire and is more durable.

Will anything need to be mounted on my home or business?

Yes, a box called an Optical Network Terminal or “ONT” will be mounted to the exterior of your home or business.  It contains the electronics that convert a signal of light from the fiber into usable telephone, internet, and IPTV.  The ONT measures 12″ x 10″ x 4″

In addition, there will be a box installed inside your home or business to supply power to the ONT and provide battery backup for your dial tone in the case of a power outage.  The battery backup will provide up to 8 hours of dial tone in the event of a power outage.
